SPRINGFIELD, MA (WFSB) -
Police in Springfield, MA, said they arrested a man after watching him stomp on a hawk that was feeding on a pigeon that the hawk had just hunted.
Around 7 a.m. Tuesday, police said they were traveling down Pearl Street toward the police station when they observed the hawk feeding on a pigeon.
The detectives said they slowed their unmarked cruiser down to take a picture when a man came up onto the sidewalk and threw a log at the bird.
The police officers reported seeing feathers blow up into the air.
The stunned officers said that before they had time to react to what they saw, the man then took a candlestick he was holding and hit the hawk again.
Police said he then began to stomp on the bird, which was unable to fly away because of its injuries.
The officers then ran to the man who was stomping on the bird and placed him under arrest.
George McKenzie, 64, of Florida Street in Springfield, was charged with cruelty to animals.
Police waited for environmental officials to take care of the hawk after the attack. Its condition is unknown.
