HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) -
A little girl attacked by pit bulls is still recovering in the hospital.
The attack happened while 8-year-old Mikayja Oliver and her friend were playing near their home.
"They bit her in the neck, in the back of the neck, between the legs, on her legs, all up and down her arms, on her face," said Desiree Mitchell, Mikayja's best friend.
Mitchell struggled to pull the dogs off her.
Mikayja is listed in fair condition after undergoing nearly eight hours of surgery over the weekend. The worst of her injuries was a torn artery in her leg.
Tangipahoa sheriff's deputies arrested the dogs' owners, Bridgette Harper and Natalie Newton. Both are charged with negligent injury.
The dogs are being held by animal control, pending rabies tests.
