Events and memorial services around Alabama in honor of the one year anniversary of the April 27 tornadoes.

Thursday, April 26

Tuscaloosa: A historical marker dedicated to the April 2011 tornado outbreak will be unveiled Thursday, April 26 at 9:00 a.m. in Government Plaza.

Friday, April 27

Please plan on joining Fox 6 for complete coverage of the one year anniversary. We will be airing a special extended newscast from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. that afternoon with reports from all over the state.

Tuscaloosa Memorial Service:

The city and the University of Alabama are teaming up for a special service at Coleman Coliseum. Along with remembering those who lost their lives in the storm, the service will also honor those who helped in the response and recovery efforts. The service begins at 5:00 PM. Birmingham Memorial Service:

The city of Birmingham will mark the first anniversary of the April 27th tornadoes with a memorial, a concert and a 5k run. The city will hold a commemoration service at 5 p.m. Friday 27 at the corner of Dugan and Hibernian Streets in Pratt City. American Idol season two winner Ruben Studdard will perform. Attendees are encouraged to bring canned goods to the service. The next day, former Crimson Tide star Bobby Humphrey will lead several former football stars in a 5-k run through Pratt City to raise money for storm victims. The city will also break ground on a new senior living facility and will unveil renovation plans for the Pratt City Library. The concert will wrap up with another American Idol performance from Taylor Hicks.

Cullman Rock The South Concert:

Cullman will be marking the anniversary of April 27th with the Rock the South Concert at Heritage Park. Tickets for "Rock the South" are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased in Cullman at the Civic Center, Borden's Pharmacy, or Cabin Fever. Pleasant Grove First Baptist Church will have a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Hackleburg: City-wide day of prayer. A special prayer service and moment of silence will be held at 3:28 p.m. in central Hackleburg. Participants should meet at the parking lot of the Panther Mart, Old Graces Restaurant and the vacant lot of Jeanette's Gas Station at 3:10 p.m. The moment of silence will take place at 3:28 p.m.

Fultondale: The Fultondale Fire/Rescue Station #2 will hold an April 27 memorial service and dedicate its newly rebuilt fire station with a ceremony at 9 a.m. The station will also host an Open House from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. including a free lunch, free weather radios to the first 100 people, a tour of the new station and new fire engine, and inflatables for kids. The Fultondale Fire/Rescue Station is located at 2600 Walkers Chapel Road.

April 27th Memorial at Ashville High School

Chief Meteorologist J-P Dice will be speaking at Ashville High School. The Celebration of Hope event will be from 11 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

University of Alabama Footprints of Disaster Symposium

The public is invited to a symposium to be held at The Alabama Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama on Friday the 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This event is being organized and sponsored by the Department of Geography at the University of Alabama. Representatives from the City of Tuscaloosa will be there, including geographers from Auburn University and Mississippi State University. This symposium will cover topics related to outreach, response, recovery, and reporting.

Saturday, April 28

Building Hope auction in Tuscaloosa: An auction in Tuscaloosa held the day after the April 27 tornado anniversary will benefit the rebuilding of tornado-damaged homes.  Proceeds from the Building Hope Auction will go to Habitat Tuscaloosa, raising funds for Nick's Kids and the 14th house being built through their "14 for 14" initiative.

The St. Clair County community of Shoal Creek will have a four mile walk/run and motorcycle run in honor of the April 27 tornado anniversary.

Toomer's for Tuscaloosa volunteers will gather in the Toys R Us parking lot in Hoover to collect food for a work day and cook out in Tuscaloosa. A "Caravan of Love" will travel from Hoover to Tuscaloosa to work with the Tuscaloosa Volunteer Resource Center on a project in Holt. Hackleburg: A memorial monument will be dedicated at 11 a.m. at Hackleburg's annual Neighbor Day. The memorial will include the names of 25 Marion County storm victims of the April 27 tornado, plus four victims from the April 12, 1943 storm, and the names of war veterans from the Hackleburg area. A benefit motorcycle ride will also take participants along the path of the storm from Hackleburg to Phil Campbell.

Cullman: Congressmen Robert Aderholt (AL-04) will welcome FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate back to Alabama, a year after tornadoes devastated communities across the state for a panel discussion and Q&A with local, state and community organizations that have been involved in the recovery efforts over the past year.

Sunday, April 29

Sign dedication: The community of Concord will come together Sunday, April 29 to remember the devastation of April 27, 2011 and to also celebrate the recovery the community has accomplished.
