OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -
A family jolted awake by a smoke alarm in an Oregon City home managed to escape a fast moving fire, while their dog remained trapped inside while flames engulfed the house.
The dog was found safe and sound, but only after the fire was put out.
The home's smoke alarm rang just before 4 a.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Telford Road.
The family members, including two grandparents and two teenagers, first tried to get out through the front door, but found the entry way consumed by fire. They managed to escape out of the back of the home.
Several oxygen tanks being used for home healthcare exploded inside. The grandfather was badly singed when he tried to go back in to extinguish the fire. He and another family member wound up being taken to Willamette Falls Hospital to be treated for minor smoke inhalation.
Clackamas County Fire crews battled large flames coming from the back and front of the house, and on the roof. Extensive damage was done to the home before the fire was put out.
Firefighters eventually found the family's dog, Luke, still locked in a crate in the back side of the home. Amazingly, Luke's only apparent injury was smoke inhalation.
Initial reports indicate that the fire may have started in the living room. Monetary damage is estimated to be about $200,000.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
