New information on Shreveport shooter who killed himself Monday

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

We've learned more about the late night shooting that landed 33 year old Lakeisha Robinson in the hospital and led to the high speed chase through several parishes that ended with the shooter killing himself.

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Lawhon in the Caddo Heights area of Shreveport around 10:00 Monday night.

Police say 46-year old O.B. Mitchell tried to break into Robinson's home. She ran from the house and he chased her. He shot her in the stomach area, and she ran into a neighbor's house.

"We believe that they were involved in a romantic relationship some time ago," says Shreveport Police spokesman Bill Goodin. "According to preliminary information the detectives were gathering is that she had broken that relationship off some time ago, maybe even last year. So this was something that was no longer a viable, current relationship."

One neighbor tells us he saw Mitchell walk up the street with what appeared to be a gun in his hand, and then disappear down a path.

Mitchell fled the scene, but was spotted soon after going south on Interstate 49. He led law enforcement on a chase through several parishes. State police put out spike strips on Interstate 49 south of Natchitoches and stopped Mitchell's car. That's when he shot himself in the head.

Sources tell us a projectile from that fatal gunshot wound ricocheted off of a Desoto Parish Sheriff's Office car.

O.B. Mitchell was no stranger to the law. We've learned that he had several previous arrests. Two were for DWI (1997 and 2004) and two were for aggravated assault (2001 and 2011). He pleaded guilty to the most recent charges.

One person who claims she knew Mitchell spoke to us via telephone on the condition of anonymity. She says he had a troubled past, but was trying to turn his life around.

We're told, Lakeisha Robinson is in fair condition.
