Unemployment rates for veterans lower than national rate

Posted: Updated:

The unemployment rate within the veteran community is actually lower than the national unemployment rate according to new statistics. While many veterans receive open arms from family and friends, the same can't be guaranteed from local employers.

One Air Force veteran says he didn't want to be identified on camera, but says he's new to being unemployed. It's a feeling many returning soldiers will feel, for perhaps the first time, when they return from service.

"It's just going to be a big adjustment when they come back," says the retired airman.

But the Louisiana Workforce Commission says there may be good news.

"The veteran unemployment rate is less than the general unemployment rate and that's unusual…Last year the rate was quite high for veterans," says Jacques Lasseigne.

Lasseigne says the rate for veterans was around 7% in early April. The national unemployment rate is 8.2 percent.
