SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Cedar Grove home was heavily damaged by fire early Wednesday morning, but the family living there managed to escape unharmed.

The Shreveport Fire Department responded to 244 W. 76th Street at 2:56 a.m. for a reported house fire.  Minutes later, the first engine company arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the windows at the southeast corner of the home.

It took 6 units-20 firefighters-15 minutes to bring the fire under control. Fire officials estimate the fire damage at approximately 40 percent.

An adult female occupant told fire officials she had been burning a candle in dresser drawer for lighting because her utilities had not been connected. She informed fire officials she awakened to find flames at the window of the room where she was sleeping.

She quickly grabbed her two children and went outside to call 9-1-1. There were no reported injuries. The exact cause of this fire is under investigation.
