Korean War hero honored

As the planes flew over, a patriotic crowd stood in honor for a solider, a soldier that saved the lives of many.

U.S. Army Master Sergeant Travis E. Watkins was serving in the Korean War in 1950.

Watkins was known as a courageous soldier. He even crossed enemy lines to capture their weapons.

But, during a three-day battle, Watkins was shot in the spine and paralyzed from the waist down.

Not wanting to risk the lives of his fellow soldiers, Watkins told them to leave him behind.

After his death, Watkins was given the Medal of Honor.

"He showed patriotism, he showed honor and he showed what the military was all about," said Michael  Eubank with the East Texas Patriot Guard.

And, that's why supporters came to Gladewater Memorial Park Cemetery Saturday afternoon. Eubank says Saturday's ceremony sends a message.

"I just want them to take away that, there are heroes, a lot of heroes in this country. Travis was a hero," Eubank said.
