Democrats and Republicans fight over education reform

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Democratic leaders met outside of the east entrance of the Capitol to complain about the pace of  Governor Bobby Jindal's education reform package.

The proposals would make big changes over the way education is financed in Louisiana. Plus, lawmakers are proposing to remove job protections from teachers not performing in class.

"I can tell you that I know firsthand that many of my colleagues, Republican and Democrat have real problems with local dollars being used toward those vouchers," said Democrat John Bel Edwards from Amite.

"The presentation is based on things that are factually incorrect," says John White, the State School Superintendent. "You can't argue that local dollars are being used because there is no local dollars being used."

A House bill and companion one in the Senate have been approved and are waiting for debate on the floor.

Democratic legislative leaders say Jindal is trying to steamroll the issue without enough debate and public input.
