Moonbot Studios employees react to Oscar win

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Shreveport's Moonbot Studios won an Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore".

In his acceptance speech, Bill Joyce jokingly said, "We're just a couple of swamp rats from Louisiana."

Joyce decided to open Moonbot Studios in his hometown of Shreveport a little more than a year ago. The book loving Morris Lessmore was one of their first creations.

"It sort of validates the dream that they had setting up the studio and thinking that they could something world class here in Shreveport," says Moonbot Production Manager, Sulivan Parker.

While they are thrilled by the big win, the art director for the project, Adam Volker, says it's just the cherry on top.

"The Oscar's really great to have the critical acclaim, but the things that move us the most as film makers are when an 8th grade teacher comes up and says my students want to read books now because of your film," said Volker.

The team hopes this is just the first of many successes, and they are proud to do that work in Shreveport.

"If there's a will, you're gonna see an outcome. If there's inspiration, if there's belief, if there's hard work, it's gonna pay off no matter where it comes from," said lead animator, Jamil Lahham.

In addition to the Morris Lessmore short film, they have also created an iPad app.  A story book will come out in July.
