Should inmates be forced to pay to stay in jail?

The Hempstead County Sheriff wants to join other Arkansas counties in charging convicted inmates to pay to stay at the county jail. Sheriff James Singleton says it costs $36 -39 dollars a day to house an inmate. He wants inmates to pony up $38 a day, and says the money would help ease the burden on taxpayers as budget cuts hit and gas and food prices continue to rise. What do you think?
