MARSHALL, TX (KSLA) -
The Men of Strength committee at Wiley College honored Texas educators as their mentors Tuesday.
The committee honored Wiley College President Haywood Strickland as a man of strength. Although he was honored to accept his own award, Strickland says he was pleased to honor the other men awarded. "These two men of strength represent well our concept of what it means to be a leader, a mentor, a moral and ethical figure in higher education in our nation," said Strickland.
The group also honored University of Texas at Tyler President Rodney Mabry as a man of strength. In announcing Mabry as an honoree, Wiley College Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services Joseph L. Morale called Mabry a servant leader. "If you want an example of a great leader, a committed public servant, and a role model for young men to emulate, then you need look no further than President Mabry," said Morale. During Mabry's tenure as President of The University of Texas at Tyler, the university experienced growth in enrollment, academic programs, and facilities. Under his leadership the institution has ranked as high as 19th in the U.S. News and World Report rankings of Master's Level I public universities in the West out of 335 universities in that category.
The Men of Strength Program was founded to increase retention rates of male college students, foster spiritual growth, develop leadership skills, and ignite academic achievement. The program has been reaching young scholars at Wiley since 2001.
