Feb. 19: Severe Weather Awareness

Posted: Updated:

The steeple missing from the top of First United Methodist in downtown Shreveport is a vivid reminder of the kind of severe weather we can have in the Ark-La-Tex.

It was October 29, 2009 that a tornado was headed directly for downtown. Over the course of just a few minutes, the tornado blew the steeple to the ground, landing on top of a motorist.

The twister continued through the heart of the city, knocking out windows and damaging cars parked in its path.

The fact is, severe weather like this can happen at anytime, anywhere. It's essential we all have a way to get severe weather warnings.

You won't always be watching TV when a warning is issued. That's why we have the mobile apps and email weather alerts that can be sent directly to your smart phone or computer.

It's also why we encourage you to buy weather radios. It's not Severe Weather Awareness Month in many of our communities.

Stay informed, stay safe. I'm James Smith.
