Bossier City soldier to get French Medal, decades after WWII

BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

Private First Class William Hines told KSLA News 12 the story of when he and two other infantrymen were told to guard a tank across a field. After coming under heavy fire, Hines said the tank turned around and retreated, leaving the three soldiers in the field.

"One of my buddies was shot through the stomach and we were rushed out to help him. And we were out there stranded," Hines said.

Hines's friend in the field was the first casualty in his company, and it wouldn't be the last time he'd turn his coat into a stretcher for a fallen comrade. His medals tell his story of honor while he served in the European theatre as part of the US Army's 70th Infantry Division in 1944.

Friday, Hines will receive yet another medal. This time, the medal comes from the French Consulate in New Orleans. It's the French Legion of Honor medal. Hines will receive his with the rank of Chevalier.

Hines and his division played a major role in the liberation of France and he felt their gratitude when he returned for a visit.

"It's hard to explain the bond that's between us….The medal that I'm getting now, It really makes you have a feeling there that so many of my friends would be entitled to the same thing," Hines said of the award and his bond to the French people.
