Oil spill cleanup continues in Bodcaw Creek

STAMPS, AR (KSLA) -

Emergency crews have been working hard to clean a creek in Stamps, Arkansas after an oil spill Friday.

Lafayette County Emergency Management Official James Barnes says the environmental protection agency has a crew working to clean a section of Bodcaw Creek and checking for any permanent damage. "They have a 21 man crew in here working and they have not let up," says Barnes.

Barnes says they discovered the oil spill after a Stamps police officer reported smelling a strong odor while crossing the creek on CR 22. He says Braimer Engineering is based out of Shreveport and owns the oil well that is responsible for the leak. Barnes also says crews have not found any environmental problems. "Arkansas game and fish found no fish killed and told me this morning they were pleased with the way things were going. And Braimer told me they would not leave until it was right," says Barnes.

Barnes says the cleanup is about 99 percent complete, but expects the work to continue for at least five more days. "Right now, the creek is looking like it was before there was a leak and that is the way we want it," says Barnes.

Officials say they believe about 10 barrels of crude oil leaked into the creek. DEQ is still investigating what caused the leak.
