SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The sentencing hearing got under way Saturday afternoon for Robert Coleman, found guilty Friday by a Caddo Parish of killing retired Blanchard minister Julian Brandon.

The 70-year-old retired minister was shot and stabbed to death in their Blanchard home on New Years Day 2003. His 68-year-old wife Alice was also shot and stabbed, and left for dead.

Coleman was found guilty on the same charge in 2005 and sentenced to death, but that conviction was overturned in 2007 by the Louisiana Supreme Court, which agreed that his rights were violated by prosecutors when they dismissed a black juror from Coleman's murder trial on racial grounds.

The Caddo District Attorney's office is once again pushing for the death penalty.

In the courtroom on Saturday was the family of Terry Blaze, who was murdered just a few days after the brutal attack on the Brandons. Blaze's family believes Coleman and his teen girlfriend, Brandy Holmes, killed Blaze just a few days after murdering the pastor and seriously wounding his wife.

Holmes, who was also convicted and sentenced to death for the Brandon murder, admitted to killing Blaze during the course of the investigation, and directed authorities to his body. Coleman was never charged in connection with Blaze's murder.

Still, Blaze's mother told KSLA News 12's Brittany Pieper her son's case will be brought up during the sentencing phase of Coleman's trial, which is already underway in Caddo District Court.

Coleman's sentencing hearing could continue into Sunday.
