SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A local man has been charged with two count counts of child desertion in connection with the death of his daughter, who died in December after being hit by a truck outside her Shreveport home.

Shreveport police say 32-year-old Chad Beightol was charged Friday morning following a lengthy investigation.

Five-year-old Mackenzie Beightol was hit and killed by a truck while she was riding her bike in the Highland neighborhood on December 29th. The driver of the truck was arrested on unrelated traffic warrants, but does not face charges in connection with the girl's death.

Beightol, of the 9200 block of Simmons Boulevard in Shreveport, was issued misdemeanor summonses for the offenses and released.

According to Shreveport Police, child desertion is a misdemeanor crime and is defined by Louisiana state law as the "intentional or criminally negligent exposure of a child under the age of ten years, by a person who has the care, custody, or control of the child, to a hazard or danger against which the child cannot reasonably be expected to protect himself, or the desertion or abandonment of such child, knowing or having reason to believe that the child could be exposed to such hazard or danger" and is punishable by not more than a $500 fine or imprisonment for not more than six months or both.
