Libbey Glass union employees negotiate contract

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Union employees at Libbey Glass in Shreveport made an agreement on a provisional contract with the company Thursday night.

The 650 union employees have agreed to a one-week extension of the current contract that was set to expire Friday morning until they vote on the new agreement on December 22nd.

United Steel Workers Staff Representative David Broussard said the union is seeking a new, two-year contract with Libbey Glass that would cover the same expiration date of an existing union agreement at the company's corporate headquarters in Toledo, Ohio. The union wants an increase in wages over two years and pension contributions from the company.

Broussard says the company's counter-offer covers three years, but the problem is it would be out of sync with the corporate renewal date. The union does not want any disadvantages during negotiations.

KSLA News 12 attempted to get a comment from Libbey Glass at its corporate headquarters in Toledo, Ohio, but a phone call to that office has not been returned.
