SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Shreveport Police are investigating what led up to an officer involved fatal shooting Thursday night.
It happened around 7 p.m. at the Fair Park Terrace Apartments, located at Mertis Ave. and Greenwood Rd., in Shreveport's Queensborough neighborhood.
According to police, an off-duty officer, working security at the apartments stopped a man who was reportedly acting suspiciously
When the officer approached the man, who authorities have identified as 44-year-old Michael Gilyard, the two reportedly got into a fight and that's when police said the officer fired several shots.
Gilyard was taken to LSU Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not released the name of the officer involved in the shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.
While police investigate the incident, Gilyard's family is speaking out against the Shreveport Police Department.
Zenobia Rose, mother of the victim, believes that deadly force was not necessary in the incident.
"He was walking away," said Rose. "For him to get shot in the back, that's not justifiable." "Why would you shoot somebody in the back," Rose said. "He was trying to kill him because he shot him more than one time."
