KKK leaves fliers in Colonial Heights neighborhood
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, VA (WWBT) - It's happened again. Members of the Ku Klux Klan leave fliers at homes in Colonial Heights. The KKK did the same thing in the Woodlake neighborhood in Chesterfield back in September.
Dozens of these fliers showed up on the edge of the driveway in many homes along Conduit Road in Colonial Heights. The fliers show a smiling white family on the front with a warning - it says whites will be a minority in the United States in 34 years.
Dennis Hayes says this flyer is like a blast from the past.
"I haven't seen anything like this since the early 60's," Hayes said. "It's kind of a surprise. I'm a little shocked."
A group out of Powhatan called the Knights of the Southern Cross Soldiers of the Ku Klux Klan passed these out. We spoke to the imperial wizard on the phone. He says the flier promotes white equality, not supremacy, and that they are protected under free speech.
According to the imperial wizard, the group gained new members after a similar literature drop in Chesterfield in September.
Betty Stein hadn't noticed the flier at the edge of her driveway until we stopped by.
"That would immediately go in the trash can," Stein said. "If I had a match I'd burn it."
Dottie Henderson has lived in this neighborhood for years. She says her flier went straight into the trash.
"I don't like them imposing their views on me," Henderson said. "It's just hate literature so I don't like it."
Colonial Heights Police say they've received several calls about these fliers. They say they'd like to know who left them, but the only thing they can charge them with is littering.
The KKK claims it's dropped similar fliers in Short Pump, Goochland, Mechanicsville and Newport News. They say they will continue to pass them out.
