SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Democrat Gregory Tarver has won the Senate District 39 seat in a runoff election, unseating incumbent Lydia Jackson and re-claiming the seat he gave up 12 years ago. Throughout the race, Tarver claimed he could bring much needed representation back to both Shreveport, and the surrounding rural areas.

Tarver said it was the rural vote that pushed him ahead. Those rural districts usually take longer to report results, Tarver's explanation for a late surge in the results. Though Tarver pulled ahead later in the night, it was a very tight race, making some of his supporters nervous initially.

Tarver spoke to his supporters, saying that everything that happened before the polls closed is in the past.

"We've got to let what happened in the past stay in the past and start a new day. At 8 it was a new day. At 8 tonight, everything that was said in the campaign is done," Tarver said of the heated campaigns.

Tarver won with 873 votes, with 52% of the vote to Jackson's 48%
