LOGANSPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Where there used to be water at Toledo Bend, Sunday there was fire.

Vegetation that had grown up in the lake bed of Toledo Bend caught fire Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m.

DeSoto Parish Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle says that at one point a mandatory evacuation of several homes on the very north end of the lake between Logansport and Stanley was thought to be imminent, but workers with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry showed up with a bulldozer and was able to dig a fire line around the affected part of the lake to contain the fire.

As of Monday morning, that fire has been contained.

Now, once the fire is burned out, DeSoto Fire District 5 Chief Todd Kramer says an estimated 20 acres of lake bed will have burned.

DeSoto Fire District 5 was the lead agency, but mutual aid was provided by Districts 1 & 8.  At the peak of the fire threat 30 – 35 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Kramer says no structures were burned, and there were no nearby road closures.

Kramer also says that arson is not suspected, but the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.  A full investigation headed up by state Forestry officials is underway.
