Domestic Violence is an epidemic in our community. It happens every day and can happen to anyone, regardless of race, financial status, or religion.
In fact, one in four women will experience Domestic Violence in their lifetime.
So far this year, there have been four murder suicides that have taken nine lives in the Shreveport and Bossier area. Caddo Parish-Shreveport ranks highest in the state for the number of Domestic Violence related homicides so far this year.
Chances are you know someone who is currently experiencing or has experienced Domestic Violence. What can you do to help end violence against women?
As a friend, neighbor or family member, the best thing for you to do if you suspect Domestic Violence is call the Confidential and Anonymous, 24 hour Providence House crisis line at (318) 226-5015 and report what you've seen, heard, or suspect.
We will report the incident to the police, who will follow-up on the situation.
If you are experiencing Domestic Violence, you do not have to continue living in fear. If you do not have access to a phone, you can also go to a fire station to find safe shelter.
The fire department will provide emergency treatment for you and will transport you to a safe place.
Imagine a community where no one lives in fear. October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Let's all do our part.
I'm Simone Hennessee with Providence House.
