Bear Creek fire destroys 66 homes

MARION/CASS COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The largest wildfire in the state has destroyed 66 East Texas homes.

But the good news is firefighters have made significant progress in putting it out.

The Bear Creek Fire is now 80% contained, according to the Texas Forest Service.

It is basically in what the forest service is calling, the JAL triangle. That's Jefferson, Avinger and Linden, which are on Highways 49, 59 and 155.

The fire has burned more than 40,000 acres in Marion and Cass counties.

We're told Marion County officials are seeking emergency aid funding to help the people who lost their homes.

The fire is so big, officials shut down a segment of Lake O' the Pines so airplanes could refuel their water tanks and not put anyone in danger.

In an effort to help, officials say residents have donated $10,000 cases of water, 8,000 cases of Gatorade, and clothes and hygiene items to firefighters.

So far, $3000 has been raised to help displaced families. We're told Marion County officials are seeking emergency aid funding to help the people who lost their homes.
