Sept. 11: Remembering First Responders Editorial

Posted: Updated:

In recent days wildfires have become a real threat in the Ark-La-Tex.

A few have popped up close to larger cities, but most of the trouble is in our rural neighborhoods where water resources to fight those fires are limited and so is manpower.

If you live in those areas you know what I mean. In many cases volunteer fire companies are the first line of defense.

Hundreds of men and women work a full time job, yet they still find time to train and practice to battle fires of all kinds and provide a sense of safety and security even in the most remote sections of our communities.

Some have even come from other states to help battle these fires.

One viewer who contacted me said it best.

"Being in a rural area most of those firefighters are volunteers and I am grateful they were there."

As we remember the 10 year anniversary of 9-11 and honor those in public safety who've sacrificed all for us. Let's also remember our local first responders who come to the rescue every day.

I'm James Smith.
