Hurricane Irene is quickly approaching the East Coast of the United States.
Although it is not expected to hit Louisiana or Texas, it is an important reminder to us all about the dangers these storms pose.
We don't have the same risk as our neighbors along the coast, but we all know from past experience, once these hurricanes come ashore and move inland, torrential rains can follow and that means flooding.
And here's something you need to know.
Standard Homeowners Insurance does not typically cover flood damage. Check your policy, there's a good chance the insurance policy you have on your home won't pay for flooding.
Some of you found that out the hard way.
There is a National Flood Insurance Program that provides homeowners, businesses and renters with the best protection against flooding.
It is fairly inexpensive to get, but you need to act now because it takes 30 days for the flood insurance policy to take effect.
You can learn more about your flood risk and what you can do about it by going to the website, floodsmart.gov or calling 1-800-427-2419.
Act before it's too late. I'm James Smith.
