Aug. 21: Another Casino? Editorial

Another casino for the Ark-La-Tex moved one step closer to reality when the state gaming board approved the transfer of a gaming license from Lake Charles, Louisiana to Bossier City, Louisiana.

Shreveport-Bossier became a major gambling destination in the 1990's. Casinos here account for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars of tax and other revenue for our local economy. It's one reason we've done better than other parts of the country during the recent economic downturn.

The proposed new casino, called Margaritaville, is a $181 million project. It will employ over 1,000 people. If all goes according to plan, it will open by Summer 2013.

Officials in Bossier City support the project. However, there is some concern the new casino will cannibalize customers currently going to the other casinos in our community. Margaritaville backers say their casino will actually help all local casinos.

We'll hear much more as we approach November. That's because nothing can happen until voters in Bossier Parish have their say. A vote on the new casino is set for this November.

Let me know what you think. I'm James Smith.
