It was one year ago when six young people waded into the Red River at Hamel Memorial Park, quickly got into trouble and drowned.
It was one of the worst drowning accidents in Caddo Parish history.
At the time, it was pointed out that a sign that says "No Swimming" or a sign that says "Dangerous currents, do not swim here" might in the future prevent this from happening again.
But, here we are, 12 months later and nothing has been done to warn the public. Officials have said, such signs would be ineffective.
That strikes me as strange. There are other warning signs at the park. This one says, "No Alcohol and No Motorized vehicles." Odd that the city thinks these signs are worth putting up, but others warning people they might drown are not.
I've been to plenty of lakes and beaches where signs are posted warning people not to go into the water. I'm sure you have as well. It will be interesting to see what our elected officials have to say if someone else loses their life.
A warning sign at this park just makes sense. It's a matter of public safety. Let me know what you think.
I'm James Smith.
