July 24: No Phone Zone editorial

Posted: Updated:

Congratulations to the Bossier Parish School Board for taking the step to prohibit students from using their cell phones at school.

Any teacher will tell you, it's not uncommon for a student's cell phone to ring during class or for some kids to text each other back and forth. It's an unneeded disruption.

The new policy has some teeth in it. If a student calls or texts during school hours, the phone is taken away and held until a parent picks it up. If it happens again, a $15 fee will have to be paid before the child and parent can get the phone back.

After four times, the phone is kept by the principal until the end of the school year.

It's interesting, one reason for the policy is the temptation some students have to text or send inappropriate messages and pictures. School officials want to make sure that doesn't happen during school hours.

This is one policy other school districts should adopt. Let me know what you think. I'm James Smith.
