SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
A Shreveport K9 officer has been injured during a chase involving a suspect believed to be connected to a series of burglaries in downtown Shreveport targeting several nightclubs.
Police confirm the chase began at a traffic stop at 2:14 p.m. at Caddo Street and Louisiana Avenue, where the suspect was pulled over in a white van. Police say the suspect cooperated at first, but suddenly took off, heading over the Texas Street Bridge into Bossier City.
At that point, the suspect apparently jumped into the Red River at the dead end of Traffic Street, near Bass Pro Shops by Louisiana Boardwalk. A Shreveport K9 was sent in after him and did manage to bite him, but both appeared to be having trouble staying above water. The K9's handler then jumped in to assist and was also injured when the K9 also bit him in all the confusion.
A Bossier City police officer went in and was able to pull the struggling, bitten suspect out of the water, where several officers were waiting to take him into custody. His name has not been confirmed.
Both the suspect and the K9 officer have been taken to LSU-HSC for treatment of their injuries. The K9, Miko, is ok.
