July 20: The Future of TV editorial

Posted: Updated:

There is a debate going on right now in Washington that could impact the future of local television.

The debate concerns Spectrum. Spectrum is how our free, over-the-air, high definition signal is delivered to your television set. It's also the way communications companies deliver your phone calls, text messages and allow you to download information from the Internet.

Congress is considering action that could reallocate some television Spectrum to be used by these other services.

The danger is this reallocation could impact the future of the free, local television you have come to depend on for over half a century.

Plus, broadcasters are on the verge of offering new, cutting edge technologies like mobile television, putting on breaking news and weather coverage, sporting events and the best quality HD right in the palm of your hands.

The Spectrum will be necessary to accomplish that.

This debate is at a critical stage and broadcasters are asking you to take a stand and support free, local T.V., by contacting your member of Congress. To speak to your legislator, you can call 1-800-200-4372, enter your zip code and stay on the line to be connected.

Ask them to protect local television as they consider ways to allocate spectrum.

Thank you for your help with this. I'm James Smith.
