Police looking for suspect in Friday night shooting

An evening shooting in Shreveport's Cedar Grove neighborhood has left a local man fighting for his life.

The shooting happened Friday night around 9:55 p.m. in the 7200 block of Bernstein Avenue. Officers who responded to the scene found 19 year old Purnell Washington suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was transported to LSUHSC with what police say were life-threatening injuries.

According to the investigation, Washington and a group of friends were talking on a balcony at the apartment complex when an unknown male suspect approached them and tried to start a fight.

The suspect eventually left but returned a short time later armed with a handgun and several fired shots, one of which struck Washington.

Investigators at this time are working to identify and apprehend the suspect. He is described as a dark complexioned black male, about five feet seven to five feet eight inches tall with a stocky build.

Anyone with any information regarding this shooting is asked to call Shreveport Police Detectives at 318-673-6955 or Shreveport-Caddo Parish Crime Stoppers at 318-673-7373.
