UDPATED: I20 reopened after fatal 5-car pileup

Posted: Updated:

UPDATED:  As of 530 p.m., all lanes in both directions have been re-opened.

UDPATED: Crash investigators on the scene believe that a GMC pickup truck, a Saturn Vue, a Peterbuilt tractor-trailer, a Kenworth tractor-trailer, and a Ford Bronco II were all west bound on the interstate when the crash occurred. Investigators are in the process of taking measurements, interviewing witnesses and recovering evidence in an effort to determine exactly what caused the crash.

"At this point we have one elderly female that was killed in the accident, we also transported three to LSU with critical injuries but no life threatening injuries," said Shreveport Fire Department Assistant Chief, Lewis Johnson.

The name of the decedent is not being released at this time pending notification of family members. Interstate 20 west will be blocked for some time as officers complete their investigation and crews work to remove the wrecked vehicles, so motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - I20 at Bert Kouns Industrial Loop (Exit 8) has been shut in both directions down due to a major accident involving at least five vehicles, with critical injuries.  The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office has confirmed they have sent a coroner to the scene.

Three people have been taken to the hospital.  The wreck involved three passenger vehicles and two large trucks.

Shreveport Fire Department and police are on the scene, as is KSLA News 12's Fred Childers, who says traffic is backed up four or five miles. Police and DOTD crews are diverting traffic from I20 West to Monkhouse (Exit 13) and Pines Road, continuing west via Highway 80.

Both lanes on the east-bound side have been re-opened.
