Two days after Alabama experienced the deadliest tornados in its history, President Barack Obama flew to Tuscaloosa to take a look at the damage himself.
The night of April 27, Obama declared a state of emergency and ordered federal aid to supplement the state's local response efforts.
"This is something I don't think anyone has seen before," Obama told reporters April 29. "We are going to do everything we can to help these communities recover. We can't bring back those lost, but we can help with the grief and the extensive property damage."
Birmingham Mayor William Bell said he met with the President and Obama assured him that his city would have everything it needed to recover through federal funding and aid from FEMA. Video: Mayor Bell discusses meeting with President Obama
As the Obamas walked through some of the hardest hit neighborhoods and took time to speak personally with victims and when words weren't enough, they simply gave them a hug.
