SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - It's the time of year when opportunity fits the crime; 'Tis the season for burglaries. The number of break-in's at homes across the ArkLaTex increases with the holiday.
At this time last year, Shreveport police saw a significant increase in residential burglaries. From November of 2009 to December, the number of break-in's totaled six percent.
"There's so much more activity going on right now. It's what we call a target rich environment. There's more people out shopping and it's a stressful time," said Corporal Chris Harlow, Shreveport Police Department.
Police said there were simple steps to take the target off your home.
"Make sure that all your doors and windows are functional. That they have locks that function properly and that you use those locks."
Also keep gifts where they cannot be seen from outside, alert your neighbors when you will be gone, and install more lighting around the house. Police also said to be cautious after the presents were unwrapped by making sure not to leave big boxes outside. Try to break them down and put them into trash containers so they won't draw attention to your home.
