Webster Parish teen hits tree, passenger seriously hurt

WEBSTER PARISH, LA (KSLA) – A Webster Parish teen is seriously injured following a major crash Wednesday morning.

Louisiana State Police say speed and driver distractions are believed to have contributed to this crash.

The accident reportedly happened at the intersection of Boothville Rd. and Pie Brown Rd. in Webster Parish.

Officials say the driver, 17-year-old Ashley Sanford  of Doyline, Louisiana was driving at a high rate of speed and became distracted when she looked down to adjust her seatbelt. As a result, troopers say she lost control of the car, it spun and then veered off the roadway into a ditch and finally stopped after reportedly hitting a large Oak tree.

Sanford's passenger, 15-year-old Amy Gallegos also from Doyline was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and had to be airlifted to LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport with serious injuries.

Troopers say Sanford was wearing a seatbelt and only received minor injuries.

Sanford was ticketed for careless operation due to the manner in which she operated the vehicle prior to the crash, State Police said. Troopers also report, Sanford was also ticketed for failure to wear a seat belt due to her unbuckled passenger.
