CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - How many hours a day do you spend on the computer? Between work and play, surfing and studying if you're bound to experience some computer related vision problems because our eyes have just about had it.
"I get a headache."
"My eyes get heavy like I'm ready to fall asleep."
"I get dizziness and dry eyes."
They all may be suffering from "Computer Vision Syndrome." As we spend more and more of our waking and working hours tapping on a keyboard and staring at a screen, our eyes have had it.
"If you can imagine yourself hanging from a monkey bar for 25 or 30 minutes, you're obviously going to get very tired and fatigued. The same thing can happen in your eye," Dr. Rishi Singh, Cole Eye Institute.
The "Monkey Wrench" in your eye is the ciliary muscle. When it contracts, it allows the cornea to focus on close objects. Like your computer screen but it's not used to doing that for long periods of time.
As we get older that muscle stops working as well as it could. That's when people start needing reading glasses for near vision.
We normally blink on the average of 20 to 30 times a minute with this type of syndrome when you stare at a monitor you decrease that to anywhere from 6 to 8 times in a minute.
Your cornea is essentially evaporating in that period of time you're not blinking.
Keep the computer screen away from drafty windows, fans or vents, that can further dry the eye and make sure there is no glare. The light level on your monitor should match the intensity of the light in the room, not overpower it.
The monitor should also be at eye level, so you're sitting comfortably with no strain on your back or neck and be sure to and give yourself a break.
The danger sign is when you have prolonged episodes of blurred vision. So if you step away from the computer and you've taken a break and your vision is still blurred for a good period of time there is something else going on.
If the condition persists or worsens, you need to see an eye care professional. There are special computer glasses will help you focus on the screen with minimal eye strain.
If you are of a certain age and wear transitional lenses, you're probably already set but if you are having trouble with a computer, just wait 'until you get a load of that new fangled 3D-TV.
