GRETNA, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Parish Council says hundreds of 80-pound anchors that once kept oil containment boom in place are now navigation hazards. It wants BP to remove them.
Councilman Chris Roberts tells The Times-Picayune that some BP contractors removed boom by cutting it away from the anchors.
BP spokesman Joe Ellis says the company is reviewing the matter, but doesn't think the anchors are dangerous. He says they're designed to lie flat on the bottom or sink into the mud.
Ellis says BP is reviewing what it would take to remove thousands of "orphaned anchors" from Louisiana waters.
