Keithville, LA(KSLA)- About one thousand people - not to mention lots of chimpanzees - celebrated a milestone today at Chimp Haven: it's 15th anniversary since opening.
The organization started in 1995, and the first two chimpanzee residents came to live at the facility in Caddo Parish 10-years later, in 2005. Since then, the number has grown to 119 chimps and they expect to get 16 more in the next few weeks
"Most of the chimpanzees here were retired from biomedical research, and some chimpanzees that were used in entertainment or as pets in the past are also retired at chimp haven. We basically take care of the chimpanzees and provide them a very loving home for the rest of their life," said Linda Brent, Chimp Haven Director.
Chimp Haven is one of only a few chimpanzee sanctuaries in the United States, and the only one that partners with the United States government to care for its chimpanzees retired from medical research.
