Shreveport mother sentenced to Life in Prison w/o parole

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A Caddo Parish judge has formally sentenced a Shreveport mother to life in prison without the benefit of parole in the death of her six-year-old daughter.

Satonia Small went before a Caddo judge Thursday to appeal the sentence, but the judge denied that appeal.

Small was convicted of 2nd degree murder in the death of her daughter Shajeberne Small in August 2010.

The fatal house fire broke out back in January 2008. According to investigators Small left her daughter and her son home alone to attend a party. Now while Small was away, a fire broke out in the apartment.

The seven-year-old was able to escape the flames by jumping out a second story window to safety. Unfortunately, little Shajeberne was left trapped inside and had to be rescued by Shreveport Firefighters.

Days later, Shajeberne was taken off of life support at LSU Health Sciences Center and died.
