SHREVEPORT, La (KSLA)- An elderly Shreveport woman is facing identity theft charges. Dorothy Johnson was arrested this morning by Caddo Parish sheriff's deputies.
The alleged theft happened in 2008, when detectives say Johnson was 74, and her victim was 87. They were neighbors on Glen Leaf Drive. The investigation stalled for some reason, but the detective on the case says recent evidence led to Johnson's arrest Friday morning.
She opened one card in the victim's name, Lucy Bridges, and tried to open another but was blocked. She used Bridges' existing credit, to charge $6,500.
Her grandson, Robert W. Johnson was arrested in connection to the theft.
"She paid for medical bills, Centerpoint utility bills, SWEPCO, food, and other items, and things like that. She also went to the casino and used the cards at the casinos. And the second card, she used to purchase gas. Her grandson also used the card and was arrested last week in this case," says Det. Bobby Herring.
Dorothy Johnson was released on her own recognizance Friday morning. Her grandson remains at the Caddo Correctional Center.
Detective Herring says it is a rare case, but when someone Dorothy Johnson's age commits a crime, they are held accountable to the law just like anyone else.
