BOWIE COUNTY, TX (KSLA) – An elderly Texarkana man has drowned during a fishing trip in Bowie County.
It happened this afternoon on a private lake off County Road 2001 near New Boston.
Bowie County Sheriff's officials say Leroy Smith drowned after falling out of the boat while fishing with a friend.
Officials are working to learn more, but say smith was 77 or 78-years-old.
"What we we're told is the gentleman stood up in the boat for something, and then he just fell out of the boat; a small narrow boat," said James Prince, Bowie County Sheriff.
"And of course he wasn't wearing a life jacket."
Divers from the Bowie County Sheriff's Office were able to recover the body in a matter of minutes.
The death has been ruled as an accident.
According to the sheriff's office, the two men frequently visited the small farm lake.
