UPDATED: Virus-stricken Calvary student passes away

SHREVEPORT, LA(KSLA)- Family friends say a local teen has lost his battle with a life-threatening virus.  14-year-old Calvary High School freshman Will Mathews has been at CHRISTUS Schumpert Sutton Children's Hospital in Shreveport, where friends, family and total strangers have held vigil for the past three days. 

According to the department of health and hospitals, Will had viral meningoencephalitis, a virus that infects the lining of the brain and causes swelling.  Will was scheduled to have undergone cat-scan performed Sunday morning to find out if the swelling in his brain has gone down.

A family friend tells KSLA News 12 Mathews passed away at 8:15 Sunday morning, surrounded by family and friends. 

Ransom Ashley, an administrator of a Facebook page dedicated to prayers for Will Mathews posted an update just  before 10:00 a.m. Sunday confirming the teen's passing: "For all those who have been standing and praying for Will Matthews we inform you he is now walking in the very presence of Jesus. Mark and Tyree would like to thank all family and friend's for their support and prayer. We trust our Lord to carry us through this season for we know He is faithful. Be not discouraged o...r dismayed for we will all see him again with our Lord Jesus Christ. Psalm 116:15-"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Godly ones.""

Because Mathews is a juvenile, CHRISTUS Schumpert Sutton Children's declined to officially confirm Mathews passing without direct permission from his parents.

Family members of the victims are concerned for the safety of the community, as are new members of the Clemency Board. CBS 5 Investigates videotaped Huff riding a bike through his Tucson neighborhood. There are no restrictions placed on his proximity to children.
