LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Republican Party of Arkansas is asking the state Ethics Commission whether it's legal for a campaign to transfer money to a political party before election day.
The state GOP on Wednesday asked the commission for an advisory opinion to clarify state law on pre-election contributions to political parties. Party Chairman Doyle Webb said in a letter to the commission that such a transfer might allow the party to use the funds to help other candidates on the ballot.
A spokeswoman for the party said the GOP wanted clarification on the law. She said the question was prompted by $230,000 that Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe's 2006 campaign gave the Democratic Party during his successful 2006 bid. Beebe is running for re-election against Republican Jim Keet in the November election.
