PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains got three big two-out hits along with a strong pitching performance by Richard Salazar to beat the Pensacola Pelicans 7-4 on Wednesday night at Pelican Park to take the rubber match of their three-game series.
After a second-inning sacrifice fly by Glenn Wilson gave the Captains (37-26, 8-8 2nd half) a 1-0 lead, Joe Urtuzuastegui's ground-rule double to left with two outs made it 2-0 against Pelicans starter Bryan Rembisz (3-3). Pensacola (34-30, 14-2) got one back on Lou Palmisano's 11th homer of the year in the bottom of that inning, but a sac fly by Andres Rodriguez in the third restored the Captains' two-run lead.
Salazar (6-3) allowed a two-out walk and back-to-back singles to Javier Brito and John Alonso in the bottom of the third as the Pelicans closed to within a run again, but a big two-out single by Rodriguez in the fifth once again made it a two-run margin at 4-2.
Shreveport-Bossier then broke the game open in the sixth. Wilson reached on an infield single to start the inning, before Urtuzuastegui's one-out single and Brian Peterson's two-out walk loaded the bases. Rembisz was allowed to face Christopher Garcia, who had doubled off him an inning earlier, and the All-Star made Rembisz pay, with a based-clearing double to make the score 7-2.
After Salazar worked through seven tidy innings of six-hit baseball, Jameson Maj had a rare wild night, walking three hitters around a double play in the eighth. Hector Carrasco was summoned for a four-out save, and he gave up two inherited runs on a single and an error, but got out of the eighth and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 11th save of the season.
Notes: Eight of the nine Captains had at least one hit…Maj had not walked more than one hitter in any outing this season and had not walked anyone since July 4 until this game…Ron Hill struck out five Captains in two innings of relief of Rembisz…Uriak Marquez had three hits and two stolen bases, becoming the third Captains player this season with more than 20 steals, joining Jovanny Rosario and Bryan Sabatella. Rosario had two swipes of his own on Wednesday…The Captains struck out 11 times in the game, while the Pelicans only whiffed once.
