SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) –One of the top positions at Barksdale Air Force Base will change hands on Monday. Over the last sixteen months, while Col. Steven Basham has been 2nd Bomb Wing Commander, the group has taken on great responsibilities in national defense.
Basham says he wishes he could stay to see the program through, but he has confidence in the new commander, Col. Tim Fay.
"The 2nd Bomb Wing, I would say, is now in better hands than they've ever been before once he takes over for me on Monday," said Basham.
Barksdale's 2nd Bomb Wing is the largest wing of Global Strike Command. The wing's retired Commander, Brigadier General Peyton Cole, knows its importance.
"It's a great deal of power. It's probably the most powerful wing in the world," said Cole.
Global Strike Command now controls the nuclear arsenal of the Air Force
"There's no doubt that the President and the nation, certainly the Air Force looks to Global Strike Command, to the 2nd Bomb Wing and the other wings under Air Force Global Strike Command to be great stewards of our nuclear capability," said Basham.
Col. Basham ensures Global Strike Command has everything it needs, ranging from beds to bullets, for day to day operations. Gen. Cole says Basham will be missed, but leaves behind a great legacy.
"He has left behind a very, very well oiled machine that has been tested time and time again under his tenure," said Cole.
"It has been not only my pleasure, but my honor to serve the great men and women of Barksdale Air Force Base," said Basham.
The Change of Command Ceremony will take place on Monday at Hoban Hall at 10 a.m.
Basham will report for his new job working for the military's joint staff at the Pentagon at the end of this month.
