Oil spill affects more than businesses

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) - Churches and other nonprofit organizations are among those filing damage claims with BP for the Gulf oil spill crisis.

The nonprofits say they have been hurt because parishioners and other donors aren't able to give as much money because of the impact of the spill on the Gulf's economy.

But the British oil giant says it isn't yet sure how it will handle those claims.

The pastor of a small storefront church in Bayou La Batre, Ala., hopes to find out soon. Dan Brown says his church has lost $12,000 in the last several weeks because of declining contributions.

The company says it's a gray area, but they encourage everyone to file the claims and go through the process of verifying them.
