SHREVEPORT,LA (KSLA) – The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than 2 million cribs Thursday, most with drop-side cribs. That makes more that 9 million recalled over the past 9 years.
When Linda Spain heard about the crib recall the first thing she did was check her granddaughter's crib.
"My daughter's crib is a drop-side," said Spain.
Their crib was not on the recall list, but Spain still doesn't want to take any chances.
"Make sure that our drop-side was up permanently so that wasn't something that we had to worry about," said Spain.
The CPSC is working to ban drop side cribs.
"I promise this to the parents of America, we will have a new standard this year," said CPSC Chairman, Inez Tenenbaum.
Sid Cheatwood has worked at Baby World in Shreveport for 21 years. The business used to sell drop-side cribs, but it stopped a few years ago because they thought the quality wasn't good.
Cheatwood says parents should make sure a crib is approved by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association before the buy it.
"If they adhere to those specifications that they have, then there shouldn't be any problems," he said.
Cheatwood says one of the biggest problems with the drop-side cribs is their plastic parts that can wear out and break. When that happens, children can get stuck. The CPSC says at least 32 children have died in the past decade because of drop-side cribs, and 100s more have been injured.
"We need something with a secure edge on both sides. That way the crib does not shake and there's no danger of a child getting caught," said Cheatwood.
Recalled cribs include:
-750,000 Jenny Lind drop-side cribs distributed by Evenflo Inc.
-747,000 Delta drop-side cribs. Delta is also urging parents to check all fixed and drop-side cribs that use wooden stabilizer bars to support the mattress. The company says the bars can be installed upside down, causing the mattress platform to collapse.
-306,000 Bonavita, Babi Italia and ISSI drop-side cribs manufactured by LaJobi Inc.
-130,000 Jardine drop-side cribs imported by Toys R Us.
-156,000 Million Dollar Baby drop-side cribs.
-50,000 Simmons drop-side cribs.
-40,000 to 50,000 Child Craft brand stationary-side cribs and an unknown number of Child Craft brand drop-sides.
