Oil spill keeps Texas governor on guard

HOUSTON (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry says the Gulf of Mexico oil slick is at least 150 miles from Texas waters and state officials are closely monitoring its progress.

Perry says the oil slick has so far failed to move toward Texas due to the weather and currents. However, he says state officials are holding daily conference calls with the White House and other Gulf Coast governors to prepare for any event.

Perry toured the command center BP has set up in Houston to deal with the oil spill. The Horizon rig exploded on April 20 and has been spilling millions of gallons of crude oil into Gulf of Mexico waters since then.
