Gregg County investigating teen drowning

News release from Captain Mike Claxton, Gregg County Sheriff's Office

Shortly after 6:00 pm Monday night deputies responded to a private pond near the southwest corner of FM-349 and the US 259 by-pass after a Kilgore High School student drowned while swimming with friends. The student was located in the water, pulled to shore but could not be revived.

"Yesterday afternoon before 6:00 pm four student friends went to the private pond to swim", Captain Mike Claxton said today.  "Our investigation indicates that two of the four went into the water and started swimming across the pond when one went under", Claxton added.  One of the friends called his Father who was nearby and he came to the pond. Together with the other three students, the drowned friend was located and was pulled to the shore of the pond. "Investigators believe the recovery occurred in approximately 6' of water", Claxton said.

"The Father performed CPR on the recovered teenager which was continued by Paramedics when they arrived from Kilgore", Claxton said.  Efforts to revive the teenager were not successful.  Judge Talyna Carlson pronounced Jacovan Rashaud Savoie 16 of Kilgore deceased and ordered an autopsy at the Southeast Forensics Center in Tyler.

The size of the pond appeared to be the size of a football field according to Investigator Scott Morrison, Claxton added.  Investigators believe that two of these four students had attended athletics after school and wanted to go swimming at the nearby pond.  As Savoie swam across the water he may have experienced cramping and went under, Claxton said.  The ages of two of the other teens are 16 and one is 11.
